Silver birch tree

I have a 40 foot silver birch tree growing next to my vegetables and my crop is becoming less and less each year. Could it be that the tree is taking all the goodness from the ground? Should I cut it down?

Does it cast a lot of shade onto your veggies? I am not a veggy grower, but do know that they like to be grown in the sun! Can you move the veggie patch rather than destroy a beautiful tree? I would not have thought that its roots would be harming the crops - I assume you are manuring etc? I mentioned that in view of the size of the tree - its roots must be a lot deeper than your crops' ones go, so they aren't sharing the same soil level.
