Can anyone identify this shrub? I know it is fairly common but I can't find out the name of it. Thanks in advance.

Looks like Lonicera nitida to me. pretty little evergreen shrub.

Lonicera nitida can grow quite big (5-6 feet)- its used for hedging sometimes, but its easily clipped to shape.

yes you are right Yorks, they can grow up to 6ft I meant it was a pretty little shrub now ;o))
we had a hedge of it at the family home when I was a child.

We have a hedge of this too,but it's behind our back fence! They were part of a landscaped border on our new build properties, but we soon realised they would take up too much space,so there wouldn't be a lot of room to plant our own choices. We decided it would be better to replant them,as it would have been a shame to discard them, and they provide a good barrier between trees etc in our 'wildlife 'area, and our fence.Nice to see evergreen in the depths of winter, when the trees are bare :o)

I find that the birds love these to nest in when they get a bit bigger. In the past I have had Robins, Blackbirds and Sparrows using this shrub and as you say it's an evergreen so useful as a roost for the birds in the winter.

That's interesting,Honeysuckle, as we have lots of those birds coming to our garden, but thought it might be just to visit the Feeders .We also have bluetits, and Gold finches on a daily basis too.Our hedge is about 4 feet tall now,so a good chance they could be nesting in it.I do hope so :o)
