Loads of new leaves but barely any flowers this year on my rhodedendron. I want to keep it to a reasonable size but cant get the pruning right. I do dead head but do I remove the new leaves which have grown April to May before summer or will this prevent bud formation. Help please

Hi I have a fairly new one and it seemed to miss flowering every second year, but it's flowered for the last 2 years this time

Buds form in the summer and as it was a very dry summer that is the most likely reason for poor bud growth.
