I planted a young rowan tree it was doing fine then it went brown at the bottom the leaves fell off ,i was told it was because i gave it too much water.is this true

No., very unlikely - unless you planted it somewhere with a solid concrete bottom and no drainage, or in a pot with no drainage. Sounds like rot got into the trunk near the base - this usually occurs from damage to the bark, often from physical injury of some kind.
