Jacobaea vulgaris also called ragwort or stinking willie - yeh good idea to get rid of it - before it goes to seed. It could be hazardous to live stock or small pets that like to munch on random things (my cat for example).

looks more like a thistle to me especially with the tap root. either way if you don't want it, it is a weed so pop it in the green waste. if you have your own compost bin pop the leaves in with out the root.

I don't think this is the whole root. Looks like it broke off.
