Am thinking of doing something completely different, but is it possible ? I recently mentioned my new diet and that I now eat at least 1 head of brocolli every week. I now wonder if I could grow it and I have an 8ft x 4 ft raised bed spare for this project.
Your comments and advice are welcomed, even if it’s only to say “No chance “.

Why not? We always grew it in our last garden. Both types were far nicer than bought ones.

Thanks OB, you say “both types “ - didn’t know there were 2. I understand i can set seeds or buy plants, but is it the right time of year. Am anxious to get on with this and have a second raised bed for these if it’s a viable project

How would you stagger the cropping so that you didn't have a massive amount over the course of a few weeks each year?

I hadn’t really thought about that D, I thought from what I’ve read so far that I could only grow a maximum of about 15 in my space and as I said I eat at least 1 every week.

There's sprouting broccoli and the broccoli that forms a solid head, bit like a green cauliflower. the sprouting type just forms lots of stems with a small floret on top - I prefer this type of broccoli to the large headed type. Sprouting broccoli can be purple or green, and is very hardy, good for growing autumn and winter, but its usually started either in March for early winter cropping, or April-June for early spring cropping, not sure how it would work if you sowed now, specially given we're supposed to be having a very hard winter this year.

Of all the green, cold season veg, coaxing broccoli to produce decent sized heads is probably the most difficult thing to do as well. I've not had success the couple of times I've tried, just what's called buttoning where you get sprouts but not heads.

I’m discouraged and fully realise that if you guys have difficullty growing brocolli I probably have no chance. But I accidentally found a shop selling the ones I want at half the price of others and that cheered me up again. So please forget my idea - I already have.

I dunno Hank - your first answer was from Owdboggy who says he always grew it easily

No, you should totally give broccoli a go! But maybe just a few plants? Imagine if your 15 plants were just getting to their best then a broccoli loving pest arrived?
I've got really limited space in my back yard. A 3x6 foot veg patch & whatever I can grow in containers. So when it comes to what I'm gonna grow there's a sort of cost/benefit analysis. Spuds I can buy for next to nowt but they take up a fair bit of space to grow so they're not worth it. Spring onions cost maybe 10p each in a supermarket but I can successionaly grow 200 in fairly limited space.
Definitely try broccoli, what you'll learn adds value beyond costs?
