I keep my lawn short and have never had many weeds. Today I see the attached - all over the lawn - how has this happened almost overnight do you think and should I use some killer ?

I have had exactly the same. Perhaps because of the dry weather some of the species of grass have become more vigorous that others and managed to thrive at the expense of others.
