Depends on the variety to some extent in terms of how much sun they will tolerate, but in general, they like neutral to acid, fertile, moisture retentive but not wet or waterlogged soil (add composted manure or garden compost when planting) in partial shade.

cant add any more other than the ones I have and I have 5 named varieties don't seem to mind my alkaline soil. they are all, apart from one, in partial shade. my brother has 2 in full sun and they do okay.
