Hi I'm very new to this but I need some advice. My back garden was decking for around 18 years. I removed this as it was beginning to rot and dug down around 10cm to hard non draining clay. I have put in some raised beds around the side but now I want to lay gravel and some stepping stones in the middle between the raised beds. My question is this as the soil is clay I've found it almost impossible to level with the limited amount of experience and tools so I have put some bark chipping so down and firmed them into the ground to try to level the area. Can I simply lay some weed membrane and then the gravel or will the bark chippings not be enough to level the garden. We won't be driving on this it's just for easier use of the garden maybe table and chairs. I hope you can understand my rambling. Any advice please. :)

welcome to GoY :o)
Yes I understand what you are saying so no worries there.

the bark chips will rot down in a year or two so the area will be uneven again and you will be back to square one. Lifting gravel and membrane to add more will be a real pain!

Could you find any one to level it for you either by adding more topsoil, or levelling the soil you already have?

not much help I'm afraid but some one may offer a better remedy.

Hi Gardenless. Perhaps a picture of your garden as it stands at the moment might help members to give the best advice?

Maybe spread sand rather than bark under the membrane, but professional help would probably be best. Then you can enjoy your new area without worrying.

Thank you for your reply. I have posted a picture of the garden before bark and I will post one after bark when I can streach my arms again after all the digging. I wonder if I should put some soil on top of the bark and compact it down to try to even out the bumps like you suggested the bark will eventually rot so maybe a layer of soil on top could do the trick before the membrane and shingle.

Don't know how to put the picture here so it's ended up being my profile picture.😁

well if you are adding soil anyway just keep adding more til it is more even. don't forget it will settle down unless you 'tread' it flat.

if you have the photo the right size and the site does tell you [max size is 3mb] then have it in you pictures folder on your computer/phone.
click on the your options tab on the right at the top. the drop down menu has 'add photo'. click this and then it should take you through how to add photos. :o)
