change of appearance and size of apples.

I bought my parents a golden delicious apple tree for their golden wedding as one of their presents 8 years ago. 3 years ago they moved and we transplanted it to the new garden. For 2 years it bore golden delicious fruit as normal. this year it has born huge apples that are sharp and fit only for cooking. they are 13 inches circumference. I am wondering what could have caused this .

Hi Carol and welcome to GoY. It sounds as if branches have grown from below the graft and the scion, or Golden Delicious, part of the tree has died back.
