I want to put some cypress topiarys in my border but don’t want them to grow fast. Can I plant them in their pots in the soil to contain their growth?

It won't work I'm afraid, other than for a very few months - the roots will punch through the drainage holes at the bottom into the soil, and if you bury the rims of the pots, the roots will spread out from the top too. And if you're wondering, what if there are no drainage holes in the pot, that's not a good idea - the plant will die. Which variety of Cypress are they?
