You can't have the roots pruned, no, it will kill the tree. In theory, unless you have heavy clay soil, monkey puzzle will not damage your house foundations, but may cause heave of any paving, or any nearby sewer or drainage pipes. If you decide to pay someone to take the tree out, bear in mind they may make an extra charge because monkey puzzle is such a difficult tree to deal with in terms of its spikiness.
