I have two large laurel bushes growing in the same area yet one has got brown leaves and black stalks on one side, can anybody suggest what could be causing this please?

Blackening of the branches of laurels would suggest Phytophthora. They do tend to suffer from this disease and Aucubas also. I am not aware to there being a cure for this. Perhaps, cut out any visible damage, a heavy mulch and a feed. If you Google Phytophthora it might give you some more information. It is a similar to potato blight.
