The leaves and hips remind me of Burnet Rose (Rosa spinosissima), but I can't see the stems well enough to confirm. Were the spines pretty ferocious, Longforganlad?

I'm in agreement. I see rose hips & the signature leaves.

looks like hips from Rosa rugrosa a rose used in hedging. But a clear image of the foliage would help. Could be one of the wild roses.
