Looks like a poppy for sure, have just never seen on this large. The flowers were bigger than my open hand.

yes I think bamboo is correct with the id. they do produce large flowers. I really like them.

Looks like Romneya coulteri, common name Californian tree poppy, a vigorous, suckering, herbaceous perennial up to 2 metres in height.
