I am going to try and grow some hydrangea cuttings.
Can any body give me some hints & wrinkles ?

Are these cuttings going to be placed in a greenhouse or in your house under artificial light? If in a greenhouse it seems a bit late in the year to start a plant from cuttings. I would do the usual, angled separation from the main stem with a piece about 6 inches strip off the bottom leaves leaving 2- 3 at the top; dip the cut in rooting hormone and place in a pot of moist vermiculite. The leaves are large so to avoid trimming them so the cutting stays upright try this method of support: take an empty (of course) 1 liter bottle of soda, remove the plastic label and cut the top and bottom so you achieve a clear plastic cylinder of sorts and place over the pot used for the cutting and then place the cutting into the pot or place the cutting in first then the plastic support collar over it. This also creates a humid microclimate which keeps the cutting from wilting before root formation. Still, I think that with the days getting shorter, it is a bit too late to do cuttings with natural light. It might be better doing this late spring just as the plant has leafed out fully. Some may start cuttings in water but the problem comes when one places the plant into a solid substrate where this action causes such damage to the unsupported roots and root hairs that the cutting quickly wilts and never recovers.

Thank you very much for your useful advice. I have a green house so the cutting will be
going in there. I'll keep my fingers cross that I can root it.

I've had them strike when they are semi ripe, ie they have started to get a brownish colour on the stem instead of all green. round about know. they were put 4 to a 9cm pot in a gritty soil and kept just moist in the greenhouse. 75% success rate.

Hi, you can also root deciduous Hydrangea species from hardwood cuttings in winter, Derek.
