I have had this Loquat (Roeaceae) Eriobotrya Japonica for about 20 years now looked after it and now it looks like its ready to die on me, its started to flag about 14 days ago and has me baffled. As anyone got any ideas to what has happened to it and how to put it right.

It looks like it might be fireblight, though frost damage is a possibility, from what I hear. Especially if the bark of some of the branches was damaged.

Hi Tugbrethil,Thank you for that would it be best left to see what happens and see if it buds again? or is there no hope ? Trevor

See where the wilting branches join the healthy portion. If there is a sunken "sore" there, it is fireblight, and needs immediate treatment. I would use a copper-based treatment or Bacillus amyloliquifaciens, but I don't know what is available in the UK.
If the wilting branch has a shriveled patch or ring partway down, and looks plumper and healthier below that, it is likely to be frost damage, and the best thing to do now is to wait until new growth sprouts. A light feeding will hasten that, but remember that it is better to have a little too little fertilizer, than a little too much! Once it sprouts, cut off everything that isn't sprouting vigorously.

Hi Tugbrethil, Thank you for the advice, on closer inspection this morning I decided to take most of the branches off and it looks like to me that its in a very sorry state so I will probably fell the tree. Thanks for your advice. regards Trevor

It looks like it succumbed to fireblight. Usually, damage this bad in spring is preceded by a few dead twigs the previous fall, after bloom. The most common vectors are bees, and dirty pruning tools.
