Please can anyone suggest why the leaves on my aspidistra are turning brown?

Hi where abouts do you have it. mine did this when I put it nearer the radiator when we moved the furniture around. then when I put it in the conservatory and the sun scorched it. that was a bad one :(

so a dry warm environment may be the cause. mist the leaves or move it into a cooler position.

having said that it soon recovered and I just cut the brown bits off.

Yea, they don't like a nearby heat source nor direct sun, but if you've had it a while, does it need splitting or potting on?

Mine are growing outside so no chance of overheating at the moment!

Really, Thorneyside? They're not terribly hardy, I'm surprised its survived through all the frosty weather we've had, certainly they're usually houseplants in the UK.

They call it the " Cast Iron Plant " due to its ability to thrive in murky Victorian house hallways. I see that you are really putting it to the test growing it outdoors. If it is in a pot do bring it in and if it is in the ground place it in a pot and bring it in ....it does not take well to cold temperatures at all.

some in the ground for years and only lost it during the winter of 2011, so they are quite hardy.

That is true for the UK. Only recently growing zone maps are being created specifically for the UK whereas these maps have been well established in the USA for quite some time. My growing zone is a 6 to 7 range (northeast USA)and aspidistra would be very hard put to survive the cold temperatures of that zone whereas the equivalent UK zone would be 9a which places the UK in very much the same climactic conditions of our state of Georgia (Southeast USA). I now know why I see so many members posting pictures of plants in flower this time of year. From time to time I will answer a question from the point of view of my growing zone if I am not careful and here I was not careful.

hardiness outdoors in the UK is down to -5degC (for short periods only) though damage may occur.

Loosestrife - the problem we have here is not so much the cold or randomly cold temperatures, but the combination of that and damp. Pelargoniums, for instance, will happily withstand up to ten degrees of frost, but keel over from fungal complaints because of the damp and cold combined. I have an ivy leaf pelargonium with three flowers open at the moment on my balcony - its been there 6 years in a large pot, is 4 feet tall, but it grows in a sheltered corner, out of the rain under an overhang, on my south facing balcony, so its weathered the recent cold pretty well.

Thank you Bamboo

One of my gardening books published in 2003 has a zone map for the whole world Loosestrife. According to this GB is mostly zone 9 but our bit of it is zone 8.

Stera, now that you have indicated that there is a world growing zone map I found quite a few on the web. Looks like I had tunnel vision until now. Thanks ? ? ?

Stera: There's a zonal map in one of my gardening books, shows Europe and us, but it says we're mostly Zone 8, a bit of 7, with a little patch of 9 in the west. Not much use really, is it... maybe we should compare temperatures ranges for said zone numbers.

My Aspidistras hated it indoors in this dark Victorian cottage and another member of my local flower club had hers outside so I gave it a try. This is their third year outside and they seem to love it. Sorry but they're not coming back in. If it aint broke, don't fix it!

Bamboo I looked on line to find some more. Unlike my original one they seem to suggest zone 9 round most of the coast. But its only a rough guide anyway - Cornwall is the same zone as us but definitely a bit milder. We have only been down to minus 10 once in ten years here but normally we don't get any snow - its only fallen and settled twice since we've been here. We don't really talk about zones much in GB Loosestrife - the country is too small to have enough variation. We just say its milder in the West and colder in the Scottish Highlands...
