ROSE..What happened !

Oxfordshire, United Kingdom Gb

I have a rose which was very vigorous, but 2 years ago it only produced a few buds and they only put out microscopic leaves which did not grow. I cut it right down, but its the same this year, few buds and tiny leaves which do not grow. What happened ? It was very vigorous. abundant leaves and always sending up new shoots

Be sure the rose is getting full sun, proper drainage, has rich fertile soil & good air circulation.

Need more info please - is this rose in a pot or in the ground? Any chance of a photograph if its in the ground? Any idea what type of rose (climber, shrub, bush etc)

TO BAMBOO .. It is in the ground, it was about 5 feet high and very bushy,
It was very vigorous putting out a lot of new shoots every year, lot of red flowers. A photo now would just show a few short stalks with a few buds and microscopic leaves ( as I cut it back hard hoping that might make it recover )

TO BATHGATE..It has the same good conditions it always did have, and all the other Rose bushes in the garden are doing fine

has it had any accidental contact with weed killer/over spray.
did you mulch it with farm yard manure. there was a problem a couple of years back about residual weedkiller in a manure causing stunted growth that sounds like this.

Has anything changed in the vicinity, such as a shrub or tree close to the rose getting much larger, or anything else dying or showing sickness (I mean woody plants). Have you seen honey coloured toadstools anywhere in September? Has anything been spilt in the area, or dumped there (builders with left over cement, that sort of thing). Is the rose close to the lawn and have you treated the lawn with anything like a weed treatment, starting two or three years ago? Have you used any type of weed or stump killer in the vicinity and if so, what? Do you live somewhere that got flooded or waterlogged a couple of years ago?

I get why you don't think its worth posting a photo, but a shot of the general area its planted in might be helpful.

SEABURNGIRL...NO CONTACT WITH WEEDKILLER OR ANY CHEMICALS..I didn't mulch it.. put fertiliser on it after one spring it failed to grow ( granules )
..
BAMBOO...nothing changed in the vicinity ..no other plants affected..nothing spilt nothing dumped..it's in the lawn but I use no chemicals on the lawn...it's the most free draining ground you could imagine ( soil over Oxford gravels)
.
No toadstools
.

I could try borrowing a camera but all you would see is some short stalks with a few buds and some minuteleaves
.
I think maybe I will never know what has happened to it
.
One year abundant growth
The next year almost nothing
I cut it very hard back as I thought it might produce new shoots, but the second year just a few leaf buds which do not open and a couple of tiny leaves
.
Doesn't seem to be a disease
.
I think I will never know..but I am puzzled

Was there a rose growing in that area previously?

BAMBOO .. No , there was no rose in that spot before
I guess it grew vigorously for about 10 years until one Spring it just didn't
Some leaf buds which just didn't develop
No new shoots
That was last Spring
I cut it down hard in the Autumn
But this year it is just the same
Barely a flicker of life

Maybe just one of those insoluble mysteries ?

Problem at the root, I suspect, now everything else has been ruled out, that's the only thing left. If you decide to put another rose in there, be sure to use mycorrhizal fungi (Rootgrow) when planting, to reduce the risk of rose sickness in the new plant, allthough whatever got this one might get a new one too...

BAMBOO
Well that's a possibility I could investigate..
Thank you for taking an interest in my problem
It was just so puzzling
One Autumn growing vigorously , then the next Spring almost nothing
Root fungus ..hmmm
If I get a new one I will put it some distance away
Next time I want to look for the most fragrant variety I can find
Even to have a possible culprit helps
I hate puzzles with not even the germ of any answr I can see ☺ ☺ ☺
Thankyou
If I get hold of a camera I will send you a photo ( & of my favorite rose too )

Looked at the photos - what's the woody trunk next to the rose flowers?

15 Aug, 2016

it's the stem of what was the very vigorous rose bush
actually that photo is pretty useless
it doesn't show the whole thing
a few vestigial roses appeared after very few undeveloped leaves
for sure it's dead and a goner
this is the second year it hasn't grown
i will try find a better photo of it and post it in my photos

it's just the thick stem almost dead & a few vestigial roses coming off the dead stalk
fungus will be on the roots ( which by now are all dead )

How do I say thanks?
