Can I plant sweet peas to trail rather than climb? As I do with nasturtiums

Thank you. The pots are large "long toms" - about the size of a chimney pot planter so will go ahead as have LOTS of seeds

No reason why not, but they like a nice, deep root run, so unless you buy one of the dwarf varieties, make sure the pot you use is deep enough to provide that, won't work in, say, a hanging basket.
