I have two types of ivy growing on my trees, can someone help identify both? One of them has some type of berry. Thanks!

There is just one, Hedera helix You will find that the lower leaves have points and the higher ones don't. It is the stems of higher ones that flower.

The second picture looks like the variety 'Baltica', the most common variety of Hedera helix sold in the U.S.. The first picture could easily be the mature fruiting foliage of 'Baltica', but if the leaves are much larger, and it is a separate plant, and you garden in a warm climate...it might be the fruiting form of Algerian Ivy (H. canariensis). I mention it, because I can't tell just how big the leaves are in that picture, but they look more like Algerian Ivy to me.

I never imagined anybody would actually buy what looks like the wild variety of Hedera helix in the UK. Just shows how dodgy it can be to answer a question from another country with info that applies to yours! From the photos this one looks to me exactly like the wild one that grows like mad here in West Wales on any tree it can get a hold on.

'Baltica' looks very much like the same kind, Steragram. My understanding is that it was selected for its cold tolerance and traditional appearance.

Yes I'd say you have the one type but showing juvenile and mature foliage. the flowers are excellent food for early flying insects and the berries are a superb food for birds too.

Best way to check is to look at the bottom stems of both. If the bottom stems of the non pointed ones are the same as the top then yes you have two sorts. If they change half way up my first reply would be correct. But Tug is probably right as he's in the US like you.

It depends on where in the U.S. Marie is, Steragram. I garden in Zone 9b, while Algerian Ivy is only hardy to about 8a, if I remember rightly. There's nothing in the photos that gives me a good read on her climate.

Yes, it sure is a big place....
Marie the berries "of some sort" are ivy berries...
I hope you add another comment to let us know what you discover, whether there are two different stems in the ground and whereabouts in the US you are.. You will see now why there's a space on your profile for where you live as it can affect the answer to your questions.

Note also that Ivy berries are strictly for the birds...because they're toxic to humans!

How do I say thanks?
