Hya can anyone suggest a First Early Potato, with a good Crop, i have tried several Pentland, Arran Pilot Rocket, etc, but they never seem to give a lot of Potatoes, and sometimes several have what i can only describe as Rust Marks on them, which i just chuck on the Compost heap, where am i going wrong, is it to much water, or something else, would appreciate your advice, Thanking you, piperdanny123

I like to plant Sutton's Foremost, but I would suggest that, if possible could you look out for a local allotments and ask them which is the most suitable variety for your part of the country. (Moongrower gardens in Scotland so she might have some suggestions). As far as the rust marks, it could be some sort of scab or soil-born disease. Are you growing your potatoes in the same place every year? Could be that your soil is too alkali, line the planting holes or trenches with your first grass cuttings. Also some varieties are more prone to disease than others.

I've had good crops from Casablanca - nice shape colour and texture but it doesn't have a very strong "new potato" flavour if that's what you're after.
Rocket is recommended for both flavour and heavy crop haven't tried it - if you do try it let us know how you get on.
If you get the rust marks this year after following Jimmy's advice upload a photo. But if they don't affect the whole potato there is no need to trash it, just cut off the good parts.

Ulster Chieftain is good for salads, boiling and roasting. We've tried various different first early varieties over the years and generally had good success with them all. What are your soil conditions Piperdanny, do you put compost in the bottom of the trench you are going to grow them in and do you religiously ridge them up as the green shows come through? All this can have an effect on crop yield and whether you get rust. I trust you are not growing them in the same spot every year as this is a recipe for problems.

Have to say that whilst I know of folk who seem to do well growing potatoes in containers that hasn't been our experience. We are going to try again this year as we've lost the final area of ground where we were growing veg in a neighbour's garden as she has created silly height raised beds (70cm high by a good 1.5 metres in width). We love our pink fir apple potatoes so will give it a go and cross our fingers.
