The silver birch looks normal but at the bottom, does it feel solid or is it rotting? The flower is an Anemone de Caen which is a perennial, very pretty colour. Having looked again, now I'm doubting myself. Perhaps someone will verify.

Wow. The silver birch looks awfully close to some sort of building. If it's close to the house, I'd get it moved asap!

The birch is right beside a wall and the house, is that the wrong place, it's been there for the last 3 yrs

Yes, if that's the house wall, the tree is totally in the wrong place. Not only is it far too close (silver birch gets big, so the canopy will have no room to spread), more importantly the roots will damage the foundations (and the hard landscaping).

Also we found the roots can invade drains - we had to cut one down for that reason although it was well away from the house.

And when it gets bigger, the catkins and seeds will start to block the gutters. And if the wind blows while you have your windows open you'll end up with a house full of the damned seeds. I have three neighbours with these trees and they're a menace! It's got to the point where I can't have my windows open when the trees are shedding. We had ours removed. In my opinion they are totally the wrong trees for suburban gardens - beautiful though they are.

You need a good half acre of ground to have a silver birch tree...
