I have just received some horse manure at my allotment. Myself and some fellow allotment holders are going to plant some Rhubarb, in some unused ground at the allotment. The horse manure is about 2 months old we are going to mix some straw with it and are going to dig a trench about 20" deep and back fill with the straw manure and soil. and wait till spring before planting Rhubarb. Would that be ok. Looking forward for your advice on it.

I think it would be better to just keep it in a pile turning it over often for aeration. Doing that, will make it compost faster and it will be 100% ready for spring planting.

Thank You Loosetrife2. I do realize it would be better to leave it in a pile till it starts to rot. But my problem is storage area. I was hoping I could dig it in and leave it till spring before planingt. If I do find a storage area should I mix the straw through it and leave till spring. It is our first time to get it fresh. We would normally get it ready for use in bags.

Yes mix the straw in. That will supply the decomposing bacteria with much needed carbon.

Ok to dig the trench, put the fresh horse manure in. Add some top soil, put the Rhubarb roots on top, cover with more soil. Dont cut the Rhubarb stems for 3 years.

Dont do this with seed Potatoes, or you will get Thrips and a ruined crop.

If you do that make suree its quite a thick layer of topsoil though as fresh manure would burn the roots it gets into contact with.

All hail to those who have good workable topsoil !
