What are you planning to put in the raised bed? If you're not planting until spring you could leave the digging and let the winter frosts do the work.

Can't see why you wouldn't put the Malone in your compost bin, thou you might want to make sure there are no seed heads or you could have them springing up all over the place when you use the compost.

And I'm not using the raised bed until next year so no digging. Although, come to think of it I could put my onion sets in there in a month or so. The onions I grew this year were really good.

If the seeds are ripe (from the Malope) you could save some for next year Hank - either way, Urbanite's right - remove the seed heads and put the rest in your compost bin.

You don't want onions in the same patch two years running.
Crop rotation - to reduce pests and disease and allow the soil to replenish. Check out various suggestions for 3 or 4 year rotations depending on what crops you prefer.

I understand that U,thanks, the empty bed was full of lettuce this year. I've eaten so much lettuce I think my ears are growing - but fortunately I love salad sandwiches.
