My plants looked to be getting attacked by various insects, I've bought the usual bug sprays but they have not had the desired effect, anybody got any recommendations?

Agree we need to know what is being attacked and a photo would certainly help.

Agree with the others - need to identify the pest before treating, the same way a doctor identifies what's wrong with you before giving you any medication.

Well you first have to identify what is attacking your plants. Is it ants, caterpillars, aphids? There are different remedies for different offenders. Posting a picture would help too.
