i have a very old hydrangea bush ,never really been looked after, the flowers are plentiful, but only small: is it ok to cut it down to ground level? i ask this because i am limited in what i can do , thinning out would me a bit much for me

I'd be inclined to spread the cutting down of the old stems over three years, doing one third each year. It will stress the plant less.

Probably needs feeding if the flowers are always small, though a picture would be good.
If you cut it right down, you won't get any flowers at all next year, assuming its a macrophylla (mophead or lacecap) variety - you also risk, doing it now, that it dies during winter, so if you want to cut it right down, don't do it till spring.
