Is there any connection between a fierce attack of mildew on lupins and courgettes and their being overshadowed, to some extent, by pine/fir trees?

More likely the weather conditions than anything else, though lack of water at the roots does leave plants open to infection. Conifers take a lot of water out of the soil.
