I have a cucumber, very healthy plant growing in the greenhouse. Five footish tall, full of flowers. All they do is drop off and no baby cucumbers. I have never had this problem before, so no idea what is causing it. Help.

Those are the male flowers, eventually the female flowers come.

Thankyou. I have read that on the internet. But have never had this happen before. So can I ask, how big do you think this plant will get before it produces female flowers. Or is that like asking, how long is a piece of string.

They just keep growing maybe over 10 feet. Can you give them something to climb? They would really like that. A trellis or something like.

male flowers normally form at the same time as the female - just behind them -I have never known them just to drop off - I normally pinch them off - if you don't you will get bitter fruit - Also I pinch out every other cucumber - then sop it by inching out the growing head at about 8 cucumbers - I have always found this a good way for me as I get good size cucumber and do not put to much strain on the plant to produce -- sprinkle Epsom salts around it and water in -

Only the female flowers will produce cucumbers; they show up a little later.

Have you checked the gender of the flowers Earlybird?
The female ones have a very thin cucumber shaped swelling behind the flower and the male ones just have the normal thin stem all the way to the flower. If you have both try hand pollinating using a small brush -eg a child's paint brush.

Right, I just want to say, That this is a greenhouse grown cucumber. I have checked the flowers and yes they were male. Actually this morning, I have spotted a female flower with a cucumber, right at the top of the plant, so things are looking up. I have grown cucumbers for thirty years and this has never happened before. I actually looked at the seed packet today thinking I might have bought outdoor seeds, but they are greenhouse ones. They are mini ones, fatum. Thankyou all for your advice.

So, the update on my cucumber plant. Middle of july and not harvested one cucumber. More male flowers than female and flowers still dropping off. The female flowers that do appear, yes a small cucumber forms then grows to one inch in length, as thick as a pencil, then dies off. As I have said, the variety is fatum. Supposed to be mini cucumbers. So.... Is that it then, mini as been miniscule. One inch long. Not going to go far in a sandwich.
