I soaked old newspapers in dustbin for two months and now it is full of small whiteish, slug like creatures, with about half inch long tail. what are they and are they good or bad to have.

No idea, maybe they are slugs, or some sort of unpleasant maggots/larvae, don't sound like anything good. I'm more curious about why on earth you'd soak newspapers in a dustbin for two months anyway...

Whatever you do with that filthy stuff please wear a face mask gloves and eye protection. It's what you can't see growing on the newspaper that's the real problem.

These could be mealworms

They could be Albino slugs. One way of telling if they are Albino slugs is if you can see the internal organs through their skin?

Well I haven't tried them and unlike snails they don't really appeal to me. The only reason I've not tried them is that I have heard that years ago they used eat them as a cure for TB. They would dip them in honey or golden syrup to make them more palatable.

So the only reason I've not tried them is if you have to go to that extent to make them taste nice then as well as looking like turds they probably taste like them too.

Oh, Myron!

Twoswallows - I am really curious to read your answer to Bamboo's question!

And why would you think they might be good to have?
( on second thoughts ... )

Vaguely remember these from the distant past and have found the following. They are the larvae of a hover fly, Eristalis tenax the larvae on the following page -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rat-tailed_maggot
Both can be found on wikipedia.
I think hover flies are good aren't they?

Hmm, looked 'em up, might well be those, and yes, hoverflies are useful predators in the garden - but the maggots or larvae like silage, the run off from dung heaps, polluted rivers and drains - which would indicate a high level of nasties in your bin. I'd wait for them to turn into hoverflies, let 'em all out then don the equivalent of a Hazmat suit, or at the very least, a breathing mask and gloves, and somehow dispose of the remains. And not do it again.

But please do say why you soaked the papers in the first place? Please?

Thanks Bamboo, what you said about silage, drains etc., made me remember where I had seen them before. When we were children (decades ago) they was a cattle shed which had a run-off ditch of slurry, it reeked, and there they were! Children do such delightful things don't they, and play in such lovely places, or perhaps it was just us!
