Prunus.Re my query yesterday.Urbanite-yes it has multiple stems.The label says Prunus Nipponica "Brilliant".

Answers
With multiple stems you should be able to follow the 1/3 pruning method to keep it in check for a good number of years and not worry about losing all of the flowering wood.
