Salvia Patens died

Feeling rather angry about it as I did everything recommended to overwinter this plant. It was wrapped up in newspaper, put in a pot and kept in a frost free garage. But last month became concerned when no eyes were showing. That was still the case this week, and now I see the tubers have gone mouldy despite keeping them on the dry side over winter in a cold garage. My dahlias were kept in a similar way over winter and they seem to be fine so no idea where I went wrong with the Salvia.

Anyone successfully overwintered S Patens, and what would you recommend in future?

I had two new ones last year. One I left in the garden and one I put in the wallhouse in the pot it came in. The one in the garden is more advanced than the other but both are growing.

But we have had very little frost this winter.

I left my S. Microphylla in the ground and the frosts havent been too bad here this winter but it looks pretty dead but when cutting back, there seems life in the stems, I did take cuttings though that seem fine, always a safe way of keeping a favourite.

Thinking again, the nursery where I bought one of them advised me to cover the plant in the ground with terracotta pot over the winter but I never got round to it...
