I need to make up a border of arounf 400mm ihave a ton of sharp sand can I use it then top up with top soil will it effect my beddingplants?

Hi, welcome to GoY, it seems an awful lot of sand for a border less than half a meter long, I would call that a planting hole, or should there be only 1 M ?, Derek.

Also it does depend what sort of soil you have. It will be OK with clay but if your soil is light to start with I wouldn't do it at all.

Better if you actually mixed it with top soil rather than put it as a layer underneath.
