On a cordyline australis, should I take/ cut the dead or dying leaves from the trunk? Also any recommendations for feeding?

I always remove the spent leaves, leaving them forms a skirt which some like but I prefer the palm look without the skirt. Feeding - Chicken pellets and Bonemeal is fine.
