I've never worried about it, i just lay them on top of a pot full of compost and push them down an inch or two with my finger.....they'll soon find their way to the top.

Remember ' eyes down for Bingo' there are two eyes on a Runner Bean seed. Wear your reading glasses, and put the thick eye down, then the roots go downhill.
Otherwise they go uphill then have to turn round and go down !

If in doubt, plant them on their side. The root always goes down and the shoot always comes up.
