What small animal eats bulbs and leave thewhite strings on top of soil?

squirrels, but even thought they eat some they do stash them and if they have forgotten the place they stashed it the bulbs will germinate! but then again they would eat them :(

mice or voles do as will squirrels. so they could be the culprits.
