Hello everyone....having given my greenhouse a thorough clean, I'm itching to get sowing seeds. Is there anything I can start off now...veg or flowers.....on a windowsill that I can move to the cold greenhouse in a few weeks time?

I'd hold off for another few weeks Janey starting seeds too soon can result in leggy plants, especially if you have them on a window sill

If the temp is not too cold you could try seeds that take a while to get going such as Nicotiana species.

Thanks Mg and Sandra, I'd a feeling you would advise waiting a few weeks, I'm going to have to bide my time and concentrate on other things....:((. Are you taking leaf cuttings Sandra? Lucky, busy girl!

That's an idea Volunteer, but then again I suppose we could be hit by heavy snows, come February, better not risk it.....

They say Pelargoniums seeds should be started early, but I don't know about January. They might get leggy, and they wouldn't be able to go out to your greenhouse for a long while.
Maybe some herbs eg Parsley would be a good idea to start now.
Good Luck ! :)

what about sweet peas in your cold greenhouse?

Thanks Hywel.....will try Parsley then. It's starting something that won't mind being checked by the drop in temperature.

Yes Sbg, I wondered about Sweet peas, I would germinate them in the warm then slow the growth down in the GH, you think they'd stand it ok? I fancy some of the Heritage type.

Good plan with the sweet peas...I collected loads off mine last year. But WHERE have I stashed them?

Any shrubs or perennials that need a cold spell before they will germinate could be sown now.

I don't start sweet peas off with heat. Some years I sow in November in the unheated greenhouse.

Thanks everyone for your advice, I'll have a look later Andrew to see which perennials come under that category.

Ok Sbg, that's good to know, I have some plans now....hope you can locate your seeds Sandra, now think of that safe place....:))
