I have a raised bed in about 1.2m square. It gets sun most of the day. It is about 4ft away from a hawthorn tree. can you advise me the type of plants that would grow there. It is good soil clay based but very dry in summer because of the tree and wetter in winter?

Whatever you plant there will require some watering during dry spells in summer. Depends whether you want to fill the space with one medium shrub, or whether you want small shrubs/perennials, so some idea of what you want would be good.
