Shrub ID please ...

This is a shrub from my latest blog, where GoY members are asking if it is scented. It is full of flowers (right now) about 5 or 6 feet high, but seems to have no scent.

Is this a variety of viburnum but with no scent ? Thank you.

Certainly looks like a Viburnum and there are unscented ones.

Hi Owdboggy... thanks ... I tried to do an internet search of viburnums ... I wasn't able to identify which viburnum.

Hi Pam
When I searched Viburnum tinus, all the ones I found were described as scented ...

Hi Barbara ... thanks for commenting .. I've had the shrub for a number of years, but it seems to be flowering better than usual. I can't find the label.

Hello Sbg ... Thanks... I'll ask a neighbour to sniff it, if I can find anyone willing to risk it.. ;o)

My V tinus has no scent TT ...
There are a few different varieties of it, but I can't tell which one you've got.
I certainly don't know which one I've got - I lost the label many years ago :o(

Hello Hywel ..
Ah... interesting to know that you have a similar shrub...
Thanks for letting me know :o)
Is yours flowering better than usual this year ?

Yes ... but something is eating the flowers - so I have a shrub full of flower stalks lol :D
:(((

My viburnum tinus is scented but it seems to depend somewhat on the weather. I did sniff it this afternoon and there was just a trace of a scent. Sometimes it seems stronger. (Like honeysuckle smells stronger in the evening)
If the one in the picture is tinus the flower stems are longer than on mine.

Lol. Hywel ... Something is eating the leaves of my shrub, but the flowers seem okay. Maybe if we put them together, we'd have a plant which didn't get leaves eaten or flowers chewed ...

... or maybe we'd have bare stubbly stems with no leaves and no flowers either. LOL.

Thanks for input Stera ...
thinking about the scent, this shrub is near to my sarcococca, about which I put a GoY question some while ago, and there was discussion about scent of that one ... I could only pick up the scent on sunny days ...
I'll sniff my v. tinus again in the sunshine ...

Definately V. tinus....only marginally scented especially when the sun's on it.

If something's eating the leaves, it could be Vibernum beetle. They've certainly munched mine !!!

LOL :D
You'd have the one with leaves and flowers, and I'd have the bare one :o)

Thanks Badfish ...

LOL Hywel .. you keep those flower-eating Welsh beetles down there in Sir Gar ... I don't want them ...

27 Nov, 2014

I've never seen them TT. They are very elusive :(
I'm going to spray the shrub tomorrow ! You wouldn't think such things would be around at this time of year.
I hope they don't make their way towards the east.

Eve Price that was the V tinus......it had a really bad case of shothole and we ended up removing it.
no perfume at all and a good useful shrub

27 Nov, 2014

Hi Pam
some sites list Eve Price as having scented flowers, but some don't mention that.

27 Nov, 2014

Odd, our Eve Price is really well scented.

27 Nov, 2014

Yes ... quite a lot of sites list Eve Price as having good scent !

I'm going to go out and have a sniff of mine when I get rid of a cold that I've had for 3wks. The shrub is very good in flower arrangements, I used to use the ones that the parks departments that are set back from grassed areas not too far from were I live but now I got my own in my front garden as a hedge. :o))

Hi Ladyessex ... thanks ...

Viburnum tinus . . . will only have scent when the sun shines on it!
