you need to make sure you pollenate the female flowers with the male flowers. Use a child's paint brush or q tip.

Sometimes this just happens while the courgette plants are still small as they don't seem to have enough 'oomph!' (the technical term!) to support the fruit. Once the plant grows a bit bigger the courgettes will come thick and fast and you wont know what to do with them all! Pollination is important too, as MG says, and in cold weather you may need to do as he suggests if insects aren't busy in the garden.
