can you dig up and keep geraniums from the previous year

Answers

I have Dave and downsize them into smaller pots and for now are in my Greenhouse.

But before the winter theĊ· will come into my conservatorĊ·.

However if you don't have anywhere to overwinter you can wrap them in newspaper and put them in a box and put I loft.

I have trie this method before and the take them back down early Spring.

I assume you mean pelargoniums [often called bedding geraniums]. if that's what you have then follow the advice given. if they are the perennial hardy type then just leave them in the ground.

I just leave mine on the balcony all winter, in their pots - I do, though, move them back against the house wall, and that means the rain is kept off them because there's a 'ceiling' of brick above them there. Its the wet that kills them, unless the temperatures get below -10deg C. Only time I lost two out of five was in that really bad winter 3 years or so ago, and they were the ones further away from the house wall.

I take mine into an outer hall as the greenhouse is too cold and damp here in Scotland. If they get too wet they get mould. I have had mine for years. I trim them in the spring and take cuttings. I remove all the yellow leaves in the winter. Keep them clean.

Ladyessex - yes, they probably would, provided we don't have a really bad, cold winter with consistent below freezing temperatures. Most important is they'll be out of the rain the summerhouse.

whats the difference between the bedding and hardy perennial type and how do I know 1 from the other

Easy, Davebuchan, they look totally different except for pollinated flowers which will form seed, which look like sort of long, thin beaks on both types of plant. Have a look at Geranium 'Wargrave's Pink' or Geranium 'Anne Folkard' by googling those names and looking at images - these are both cranesbill, herbaceous perennial type Geraniums rather than summer bedding type Pelargoniums (known by common name geranium)
