I have a magnolia in a pot. I have had it quite a few years and now I have moved to a house with a bigger garden I want to put it into the ground. Are there any rules

They all need some shelter. Near a fence or wall or a woodland setting is perfect. Apart from that, well draining moist soil on the acidic side and a handful of feed when planting and it should be fine.
I have just planted Magnolia Ashei in a sheltered spot in my garden.
