How can I kill climbing ivy

Answers

Cut the stems just above the ground and then remove the ivy from the wall or whatever. Treat the stumps with SBK or similar.

Use a systemic weedkiller. I used this on my neighbours invasive ivy thinking it would just kill it a bit or hold it back, but in a couple of weeks it had died completely. My neighbour still thinks it died a natural death, LOL.

Aha, now we know how to blackmail you Myron!

Oh dear! due to my occupation it seems that I've let myself get into a vulnerable position. Good job I didn't mention my cross-dressing ;o)

Agree with Moongrower above. I'm intrigued Myron, what product did you use and was that this year?

It was a couple of years ago and I think I used Sodium Chlorate. This was the best for killing weeds, but they banned it's sale some years ago. I bought a few packets before the ban and I've got half a packet left which I only use when other products fail.

Ah, well that explains that then - sodium chlorate kills everything and if applied to the ground, remains present for six months or so and stops all growth, sort of the garden equivalent of Agent Orange

It's USE has been banned since 2010. It wasn't banned just because of what it does to the environment as a non-selective herbicide (exactly like Agent Orange) but because of what it can do to human beings. It is not nice stuff! Even before the sale of it was banned (2009) it carried health warnings on the packets.

Dreadful stuff - am really glad it was banned!

I think that another reason for it's ban was that it can be made into an explosive by simply mixing it with household sugar. I believe that sodium chlorate has been banned in stores in Northern Island since the 1970's and controlled by licence for agricultural and commercial use because of this reason.

This same mixture is used by NASA for it's solid fuel rockets and it's why amateur rocketeers sometimes have an advert on their rockets saying 'sponsored by Tate and Lyle'.

Why are you cross when dressing Myron???You are wise not to tell anybody, its not something to boast about...

Yes! I often cross dress. I put my left leg in the right leg of my trousers and vice versa, then I fall over. Definitely not a wise thing to do.

How do I say thanks?
