is it ok to use wood chip from freshly felled trees (branches) as a winter cover from frost on asparagus? (planted out this year).

We use all our wood chippings straight out of the chipper

Its better to allow chippings to weather down for 6months to a year as they will start to break down and deplete the soil of nitrogen. after the 'aging process' they are ideal.
