I did the same with mine around that time of year,when we were thinking of moving house..They were still fine over winter,till the following spring,when we got chance to plant them out..had a new build garden to sort out first !

mid to late September, assuming you mean Crocosmia lucifer. Best kept potted up until you get a chance to replant.
