I have recently had my garden cleared and the grass was looking rather sad, especially compared with much neighbours much lusher green shade. I have therefore had the ground dug up and will soon sprinkle grass seeds on this. Is there anything else I can do to make the end result good. I have some bags of compost w hich I thought I could lay down.

Grass should grow easily on all but the very poorest soils, especially if reasonably drained.
Your neighbours' lush green colour is probably the result of their feeding the grass with a grass feed or high nitrogen fertiliser. You can buy these easily and just sprinkle them on using a watering can if your lawn is fairly small.
