Most trees will grow successfully in a large pot or tub, but will need regular feeding and watering to be successful. You can control the height and spread by pruning to the shape you want. I don't think Rowan should present any problems.

I agree with Bertie.
How tall do you want it to grow! Too tall in a tub can cause it to become top heavy. Too big a canopy and it will act like a sail when its windy.
There are lots of varities to choose from.
