After 6 long weeks I still only have mosquito lavae in my pond!! I now have plants in the pond:- marsh marigold, oxygenators and water mint- which is looking rather sorry for itself, leaves yellowing! I also have a pickerel plant. The cats are drinking out of the pond as are a number of birds. What am I doing wrong???

Nothing... it is simply a matter of time and patience. You are unlikely to get any other invertebrates joining your pond right now... The wildlife has got to find your pond and unless it is already there in your locality it wont/can't.

Patience is a virture as I well know, Great. Things will improve over time. Easy for me to say as I've been there (over 20 years). I'm agrevated over my pond. I't large and I have a large filter and its gone green. It will clear given time.

I'll third that. It can take many months (a year?) - but they should come.

It just that, im feeling a bit left out. 2 of my friends dug ponds one had wildlife in it before she'd even finished building it; The other had 2 newts in hers 2 days after making it. All I've got is mosquito lavae!! Hense feeling the way I do. But as moongrower hinted perhaps there is NO wildlife around here. I'll go and see whats in the pond at the end of my road. Last time I looked there were only ducks!!! Perhaps thats the reason?????

If you think about it Great, your pond is already benefitting others, ie, plants, birds, cat etc !! So be patient, the little critters will arrive, oneday!
Hope you Ok. Havn't heard from you for a while?

Hello Grandmage, been unwell lately, thanks for your concern. Finding it hard to catch my breath let alone talk! My girls have never heard me so quite lol. Had a look in the big pond, now Im worried. There is nothing in it apart from a few ducks- mallards and a couple of coots!!! Only saw 2 dragonflies, no frogspawn, nothing. Where has all the wildlife gone??????

Dont forget it has been a funny season ! ie with the weather so things are a little slow, you never know but there might be something lurking in the deep waters that will emerge when it's really warm. You take things easy now and stop worrying !! Let nature do it's thing !!! xxx

It is much too late for frog spawn Great by now there would be baby frogs. The wildlife is dying because we are killing everything off with artificial pesticides! In our determination to have the perfect garden and the perfect crops we do not allow the bugs and other critters to live. The snag is if you start destroying the insects you rapidly deplete the bird population. Not only that the insecticides do not differentiate between 'good' and 'bad' insects. If you use artificial pesticides, which I know you don't Gerat, at least make sure they do not contain Neonicotinoids this is the insecticide that is killing our honey bees off.

MG I have gone to great lengths this year as every other year to help all kinds of wildlife. I garden organically, We have log piles, stone piles ladybird hotels stag beetle homes. We feed a number of birds ( which I might say costs me a fortune). Have loads of flowers especially for the bees/ butterflies etc. Saw a mother thrush who had 4 babies yesterday!!! How great is that. This year I dug a pond. We make our own compost and I recycle everything but the kids lol Dont know what else I can do. I know I am doing my bit. I love mother nature and all her wildlife

And all you can do is 'your bit' Great and try to spread the word, petition you local MP, join a group that supports wildlife and nature. We can't change other people - only ourselves. You are setting an example and hopefully others will follow. Go take a look at the bee beetles we have on our siberian irises - posted the photo earlier.
