My sweet peas which I grew from seed are giving me lovely scented buds every day. However the botton leaves have gone like paper. What have I done wrong?

This used to happen to me a lot, especially the ones in tubs. Not so much this year as I have been given them copious amounts of water. I have also given them lots of support and then cut of the tendrils that the plants put out. I have also removed some of the leaves as the plants have been growing. Not sure if this is right, it was advice given by a sweet pea growing friend.
