I have a Euphorbia, I guess, Emerald Giant which I finally identified from a picture. It is in a large pot by my front door in a semi covered entrance. It is about 12ft tall with actually two poles. Can I cut them in half and plant the cuttings? Also will the remaining plants branch? Thanks

Hi, welcome to GoY, I think 6ft is a bit too big for a cutting, but you could take a cutting of the tip of the shoot, dip the cutting in warm water or charcoal to stop it from bleeding, and be careful not to get the sap on your skin, then leave it to callous over for a few days before putting the cutting in the rooting medium, if you then cut the trunk down a bit, it should send out new shoots on the old trunk, Derek.

Thanks, but this is a giant cactus that doesn't bloom. It puts out new babies on one of the trunks. The plant is about 12ft. tall. I looked up Euphorias as I have been searching for this plant to no avail. There is was. Emerald Giant. I think it is native to South Africa. I will look for a pic to see if I can post it.

Okay thanks, Derek. I reread your post. Duh. I have taken the babies in the past and have successfully created new plants from them. If I were to measure the main trunks across they are about 5 inches thick. Would they callus over successfully or could I expect die back?

thanks. The trunks are about 5 in thick. If I cut them will it callous over or do I have to put something on the cuts?

Most succulents will accept this treatment. I seem to remember you can use flowers of sulphur on the cut surfaces but whether this would work on euphorbias I don't know - guess it depend on how much sap you lose. I suggest you take one of the pups off the side and cut it in half and see if it does callous over - and if it doesn't, try it with the sulphur. Don't try planting the cut off part until it has calloused and then put it into dry gritty open compost.

The plant you mean, sprngrboy, is actually called Euphorbia drupifera Green Giant - not euphoria, sadly, would have been nice to find something called euphoria;-)

Sorry, I misspelled the name.

Steragram. Thanks so much for the help. I have started pups from this plant before and am aware of the callousing over before planting them. Thanks again. I think I will wait until we have cooler temps before attempting this. Have a great day.

I got quite excited when I saw 'euphoria'... thought it was a plant I didn't know about that might have interesting qualities, Stera;-))
